On 1 October 2007, the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies and Labour Watch hosted a special AIMS Luncheon featuring Swedish Human Rights Lawyer Jan Södergren. The talk he delivered was entitled It’s a Human Right: No forced union membership or dues for politics.

In 2007, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that unions cannot take dues for political and other purposes not related to workplace needs from unionized employees who are not also union “members”. Södergren represented those unionized employees in that successful case.

The Canadian LabourWatch Association has brought Södergren to Canada for a national tour and was a guest of AIMS on Monday, 01 October 2007.
