HALIFAX – Shipping delays caused by disruptions in CN service has resulted in Caterpillar Inc pulling out of the Port of Halifax. With Halifax being a single gateway port, with only one rail going in and out of Halifax to Montreal, Toronto and Chicago, the bad weather and derailments this past year caused Caterpillar Inc to switch to shipping via Norfolk, Virginia. While Atlantic Container Lines, the shipping company carrying Caterpillar’s cargo, did not lose its business, the Port of Halifax loss a major customer, as it accounted for about 10 per cent of traffic at Fairview Cove Terminal. – Staff
