President and CEO, PolyCello
Stephen Emmerson, President and CEO of PolyCello
(Poly-Cell-o) is first, a husband and father to his wife Kama and boys Hunter and Sebastien. They enjoy boating, golfing and skiing as a family.
The Emmerson Family’s roots are in New Brunswick where Stephen graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and then continued on to complete his Masters in Business Administration from Regent University in Virginia, USA.
Growing up in the family business, his first job at PolyCello was sweeping the floors in the plant, and his roles and responsibilities grew from that point onward. He started working for PolyCello full time in 1994, working in Customer Service from the Portland, Maine office. Within six months he moved into Sales and closed his first major account in which PolyCello still has a solid relationship with, 16 years later.
In 1996 Stephen moved into the position of Vice President Marketing and Sales. Under his leadership the Sales Force grew from a team of four to 10, and in 1998 he relocated to the company’s headquarters in Amherst, Nova Scotia.
It was in 2004 when Stephen had already spent 10 years in leadership roles in the company, that he was promoted to President and CEO. In 2006 he lead the purchase of the Belleville, Ontario PolyCello facility, expanding PolyCello’s physical presence to central Canada. Since then the company has continued to flourish with 300 employees in Amherst and 50 employees in Belleville.
Stephen’s strengths as a leader are strategic planning, team building and accountability. He has a constant desire to learn and drive new ideas through the organization.
In 2006 the Emmerson Family (John, Stephen and Bryan) were named Leaders of the Year by the Canadian Plastics Association and in 2008, PolyCello was deemed one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies - an honour it has been able to maintain in the years since.
Stephen is often quoted saying “it’s the journey, not the destination,” and his employees follow suit, making the most from the opportunities presented. The employees of PolyCello have been recognized for their contributions to Cumberland County and their industry through several different awards in the past few years. A few include; the Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce, Excellence in Community Service Award, a United Way Gold sponsor, the largest Relay for Life fundraiser in the County (which involved Stephen shaving his head!) and awards the past three years from the Flexographic Technical Association for Excellence in Printing.
As one of the most sustainable production facilities in the province as well as the flexographic industry in North America, PolyCello has been awarded the Innovation in Waste Reduction award from the Resource Recovery Fund Board of Nova Scotia (RRFB), recognized by Dalhousie University with the Eco-Efficiency Award, and Nova Scotia parliament gave Resolution 494 to PolyCello in 2009 for it’s environmentally-friendly packaging.
Stephen has guided PolyCello’s success through dedicated and engaged management and looks forward to many years ahead as PolyCello’s third generation leader.
