Martin MacKinnon, a corporate turn-around expert and business-development consultant, became manager of the then-troubled Port Hawkesbury Credit Union when he was 22 years old. He restructured the business and quadrupled its size.

After nine years, he left to study for his M.B.A. at St. Mary’s University. He worked with ACOA for a year as an account manager before joining Keddy Motor Inns as Director of Corporate Planning. He was the architect of the firm's successful restructuring under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, In 1992, he became a business-development consultant, working with an engineering group which was developing a new product, and a physiotherapy group, Eastern Rehabilitation Inc. which has expanded from one to fifteen clinics over the past 18 months. In 1996 he became Director of Finance and Administration, of Eastern Rehabilitation. In 2003, Martin was named Vice President Finance and Administration as well as a member of the Board. In 2007, Martin moved on to be Chief Finance Officer for Black Bull Resources, a mining company in southwest Nova Scotia.

He also is a director of several other Boards companies and is active in politics. He is a past member of the board of Atlantic Broadcasters Ltd. and the Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation. Martin also is a part time lecturer in the Management Department of Saint Mary’s University. He is also on the Board of the Canadian Cancer Society - Halifax Unit.
