Partner, McInnes Cooper
George is a Partner in McInnes Cooper's Halifax office. He practices corporate and commercial law, and has done so since 1967, except for a 'time out' in 1979-1980 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Halifax and served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice. George has acted as lead counsel in the negotiation of major industrial, commercial and services contracts in and out of Nova Scotia. He represents companies in the forest, mining, rail, energy and related fields. George has been recognized by Lexpert Magazine's Leading Practitioners lists for Corporate and Commercial Law (2007 and 2008), and by Best Lawyers in Canada as well for Energy Regulatory Law in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and Corporate Law in 2009 and 2010.
George is Chair of McInnes Cooper's Board of Directors, and is a Director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD). He is a former Director of the Canadian National Railway Company.
George is a Managing Trustee of the Killam (educational) Trusts ($425 million); Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of King's College; former Member of the President's Advisory Committee of the Royal Society of Canada (the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada); Nova Scotia Chair of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council; Board Member for the Pier 21 Foundation; and a former Trustee of the Foundation for Legal Research and a Trustee of the Foundation for the Study of Processes of Government in Canada (sponsor of the Forum for Young Canadians). He is the Honorary Swedish Consul for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador. As well, he is a member of the Order of Canada, and an Officer - First Class Royal Order of the Polar Star.
