From 1994 to 1999 Fred McMahon was the Senior Policy Analyst for the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies. He was the author of AIMS' first book, Looking the Gift Horse in the Mouth: The Impact of Federal Transfers on Atlantic Canada; co-author of the AIMS research paper "Venture Capital in Atlantic Canada: Asking the Right Questions"; and the author of several articles and op-ed pieces carried in major Atlantic Canadian newspapers.
Prior to joining AIMS, he was Economics editor at the Bank of Canada, where he was responsible for the Bank of Canada Review among other duties. He has had considerable experience as a business journalist with the Financial Post, The Halifax Herald and the Montreal Daily News, and he has written for a number of publications in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He has also held an economic research position with the U.S. Policy Studies Group at Dalhousie University.
He has an M.A. in economics from McGill University.
Fred McMahon is now Director of the Centre for Globalization Studies at The Fraser Institute. He also manages the Economic Freedom of the World project.
